Cartridge Tape Device

A cartridge tape device is similar to a videotape and requires a cartridge tape drive to read and write data. A cartridge tape is divided into tracks that run along the entire length of the tape. And data is recorded along these tracks.

Cartridge tapes are used when the volume of data to be backed up is large. A cartridge tape is a sequential access device

Cartridge tapes are high capacity devices that can be either online or offline. Online cartridge tapes are connected to your computer through which you get data in real time.

Data on offline cartridge tapes are not utilized by a computer in real time. When the data on an offline cartridge tape is required, you need to connect the tape to the tape reader device and access the data stored on it.

types of cartridge tape device

Two common types of cartridge tapes: Digital Linear Tape (DLT) and Digital Audio Tape (DAT)

• DLT facilitates faster data transfer and is used for taking backups. It helps store and retrieve large amounts of data at very high speed. In DLTs, data is stored on sequential tracks.

• DAT is similar to a compact audio cassette. It uses 1/8” magnetic tape enclosed in a protective shell to protect the tape. The data is recorded in digital form on the tape

cartridge tape drive

The tape drive allows you to read the cartridge tape. It’s always better to choose a tape drive with compressed capacities that provides data security and integrity required by today's demanding computing environments.
