Expansion cards

Before adding expansion cards in the computer, one or more free slots must be available. Like adding memory, the addition of expansion cards is a common upgrade practice.

Adding expansion cards allow you to install devices like modems, network cards, scanners and sound cards.

Before purchasing an expansion card, you have to make sure it will work with the computer to be upgraded.


Expansion cards: Things to consider

• Are there free slots available?

• Will the card fit in the available slot?

• memory RAM and disk space are crucial resources to run the device and its software

• Make sure the operating system have the drivers for the expansion cards. If not the manufacturer has to provide them.

The installation is easy and can be done in a three steps process

• If necessary, setup the jumpers for IRQ and I/O addresses (if the card is plug-n-play you wont’ have to do this step. If not, this information can be found in the card manual)

• Physically install the card in a slot

• Finally install the software or driver for the card.
