Installing hard drive
floppy drive installation
Installing a floppy drive is easier than installing hard drive. It's a two step process.
• Physically install the drive
• Connect the cables
The floppy has side mount screws that match holes in the computer chassis. The biggest problem you may encounter when installing a floppy is to access the mounting screws on some cases designs.
Make sure that you use the proper cable when connecting the floppy.
The floppy’s cable looks like the hard drive’s cable but it is smaller and twists. The cable has a red or blue wire on one edge, which designates the number one pin. You won’t be able to put it backwards unless you force it; however it will not damage the floppy.
Tip to remember: when you have completely built your computer and you see that the indicator light on the floppy drive comes and stays on when you turn on your PC; check the ribbon cable you probably have installed it backwards.
installing hard drive and CD-rom
Correctly install the cabling is the most important consideration when installing hard drive. Before mounting the drive in the case make any necessary changes to the jumpers.
Most PCs come with at least two IDE controllers for a maximum of 4 drives.
Setting a jumper designates each drive as either a master(MA) or a slave(SL), which allows a single cable to connect two drives to one IDE controller on the motherboard.
If you plan to installing hard drive and a CD-Rom, put each drive in a separate IDE controller; and set them as master (MA).
If you are planning to install a DVD also, your jumper’s configuration will change. The hard drive and the CD-rom will be on the same IDE controller on the motherboard; the hard drive set as master (MA) and the CD as salve (SL).
Install the DVD on the second IDE controller and set it as master(MA).
