power supply computers

Function of the power supply

The purpose of the power supply computers is to convert the AC(alternative current) voltage from your wall outlet to the DC(direct current) voltages required by the hard drive, the motherboard, floppy drive and all other parts inside your computer.

this guide will show you
• How to identify the input and output voltages of the power supply
• Remove and replace the power supply in the computer

How to identify the power supply

Computers power supply is easy to identify because the AC power cord is connected into it through the back of the computer. Inside the computer notice several different cables coming out from the power supply. Some are connected to the hard drive, the floppy drive, the CD-Rom and some of them are free. The Purpose of these extra connectors is to power an additional disk or tape drive should you later decide to add one.

Removing computers power supply

Some older computers are equipped with AT power supply and AT motherboard. Power is supplied to the motherboard through two connectors labeled P8 and P9. Before removing the connectors notice the position of the wires and take notes if necessary. The two black cables are side to side in the middle.

On some computers one final cable connects to a small fan mounted on the front panel of the computer. Before disconnecting it, labeled it Fan connector.

Now that all the wires are disconnected, turn the computer around and at the back find and remove the screws that secure the power supply. All you have to do now is pulling out the power supply.

At the back of the power supply you will notice the line voltage switch. The purpose of this switch is to set the voltage according to your location. In North America, the AC line voltage is usually in the 110 to 120 volt range. In much of Europe, the AC line voltage is 220 to 240 volts. The power supply in the computer can be configured for either of these locations.
