For this purpose the first step when repairing a computer is knowing how to take one a part and put it back together.

Taking the computer a part is the easiest step, putting it back together and making it work the same as it was before required a little bit of disciplin and documentation.

Why Documentation is important?
Let me share with you my experience. As a handy man, one day I open my computer and start putting the parts a side without knowing anything about what I was doing. I successfully disassemble the computer but I could not get it back to work as it was.
I had to get help from a technician friend who help me reassemble correctly. One of the thing he taught me and I have learned is documentation is very important in the technical field

List of the tools needed to repair computers
Screwdrivers: one large and one small flathead and a set of Philips head (sometimes called a cross)
Tweezers: convenient for picking up lost parts
Needle-nose pliers: think of them as an extension of your finger
Compressed air: to remove dust
flashlight: for seeing in dark places
curved hemostats: for picking up and holding small parts
the antistatic wrist strap: use to prevent electro static discharge (ESD)

Once you have disassembled and reassemble your computer 2 or 3 times successfully, you are on your way to be a good computer technician and will be able to upgrade and repair computers
Remember never force a part, never screw to tight.
