How to choose a USB device storage
USB (Universal Serial Bus) is, as its name indicates based on a serial architecture. USB is a very fast interface that allows you to read and write data to a drive much faster than regular serial interface.
The USB port can be used to connect peripheral devices such as printers, mouse, keyboard, external hard drives…etc. USB also supports plug-and-play installation.
How to differentiate USB types
We currently distinguish two types of USB. Standard USB 1.0 and USB 2.0
USB 1.0 allows data transfer at speed up to 12 Mb/s. there is also an enhancement of USB 1.0 called USB 1.1. Both transfer data at the same speed.
USB 2.0 allows data transfer at speed up to 480 Mb/s. USB 2.0 is fully compatible with USB 1.1 and USB 1.0 and uses the same cables and connectors.
If you cannot find the logo, the best way to differentiate them is to consult the product documentation.
USB1.0, 1.1 and 2.0 are compatible. However if you use a USB 2.0 in a USB 1.0 port, you will be stuck at 12 Mb/s data transfer speed.
Most used USB devices
USB device storage are very useful; they are very fast and offer la lot of flexibility.
USB pen drives
Also called USB flash memory, the pen drive has replace the use of floppy disk which can only carry 1.44 Mb of data. Nowadays people hardly use floppy disk. The flash memory is a USB device storage that offers you the ability to Store, transfer and carries your data with you wherever you go. You can transfer large amount of file, pictures... from one computer to another. From 32 Mb to 4 GB of storage capacity the choice is yours.
External USB hard drive
Backing up data is an obligation in the IT field. Losing important and valuable data can be catastrophic. External hard drives are USB device storage especialy used for backup purposes. External hard drive offers great flexibility to store music, videos, graphics and all kind of files. Usually external hard drives are equipped with USB ports that make them faster and plug and play (PnP). You just have to plug them in the USB port of your computer just like you plug a headset for example.
USB external extension device
With USB internal extension you will have to open your computer to install the device in a slot if available. With the USB external extension you do not have to open your computer. For home and small office I recommend the Ultra USB sharing hub. With this great device, you can share connections among as many as 7 USB peripherals such as (printer, scanner, camera…) and then link those peripherals to 2 PCs. With only one device you can create a full service office.
