The term PDA stands for personal digital assistant, a handheld device that combines computing, telephone/fax, Internet and networking features.
Unlike portable computers, most PDAs began as pen-based, using a stylus rather than a keyboard for input. This means that they also incorporated handwriting recognition features. Some PDAs can also react to voice input by using voice recognition technologies. PDAs are available in either a stylus or keyboard version. PDAs are also called palmtops, hand-held computers and pocket PC.
The PDA can serve as a note-book, to organize your daily task; with visual or hearing mechanisms to remind your appointments and meetings. The appointments and events planned in the note-book can be setup, in order to meet professional or personal needs, thanks to an adaptable menu (office, private… etc.) An organizer, for every task, which can be can be organized by Priority, date, and many other ways. A digital address book, allowing carrying all your friends and relatives information such as (name, postal code, zip code, phone number, addresses etc), and having them available all the time. An E-mail device, you can use to check your email, and also to write and reply to important messages.
As well as there are different computers like MAC and PC, there are different types of PDA carried by different manufacturers. PDAs are classified not by There brand like (HP, Compaq, Dell) instead they are classified by the operating system they are using. The two most popular are:

Although these two systems offer almost the same characteristics and features, there operating system and software are sometimes not compatible. Nowadays there are Linux application developed to work with both systems.
